The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller Book Review

Reasons For Reading This Book: If you have followed my book reviews over the years you will know that my best friend and I recommend books to one another or simply share what we are reading with one another. A while back she sent me a list of the books she has recently read or planned to read. The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller was on this list. I could not get my hands on a copy until recently when I was shopping at Half Priced Books. When I told my best friend that I finally picked up this book she told me she liked it but not as much as Where the Crawdads Sing which is the other book I picked up from her list at the same time. Prior to starting the book I only knew what the back of the book said. I had no expectation going into it. Content of This Book: Every summer since she was a child Elle Bishop has spent the summer in the Back Woods in her family's generation old Cape Cod cabin. After the passionate encounter between Elle and her oldest friend, Jonas, today is not li...

The Paris Apartment By Lucy Foley Book Review

Reasons For Reading This Book: As I have mentioned before on the blog, my best friend and I trade books all the time. In September she texted me that she read The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley . Her text also said 'it is a horribly written book' that was more funny than the advertised seriousness and that she 'needed me to read it so she could talk to someone about it'. She gave me her copy and I read it in a week. I had expectations going in that it was poorly written. I did not read the book description before starting and just let the writing and story speak for itself. Content of the Book: After leaving behind her terrible job and life in London, Jess goes to stay with her half-brother in his apartment in Paris. Ben, her brother is a journalist trying to make it in the city. Like any apartment building the residents are going to be a collection of interesting individuals. This apartment is no exception. There is a stylish and posh 50 year old named Sophie who is mar...

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas Book Review

Reasons For Reading This Book: As I mentioned in my reviews of Homegoing and Such a Fun Age, I am reading books on different topics this year. One of the topics I chose is race and racism. The Hate U Give by Angie Thoma s has been on my want to read list since the movie came out in 2018. Every time I am looking for a new book I always check my library to see if the ebook is available. In April I was finally able to get my hands on the ebook. I first became interested in this book when I saw a trailer for the movie. Since watching the trailer and reading amazing reviews of the book I knew I wanted to read the book not only so I would understand the movie, but so I could finally say I had read this highly recommended book. Content of the Book: Starr Carter is a sixteen-year old lover of basketball. As a sixteen year old she struggles with her identity as she is living in two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy suburban prep school she attends with her siblings....

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus Book Review

Reasons For Reading This Book: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus was Jackie's choice for the month of October. Jackie is the host of The Readheads Podcast Book Club. This is a monthly podcast book club that I have been apart of since it was established in 2020. I love getting to hear the thoughts of the hosts each month.  Content of the Book: Elizabeth Zott is a chemist but is much more than meets the eye. She is not only beautiful but also extremely smart, confident, strong, and not afraid to beat to her own drum. Elizabeth is one of the only female chemists working at Hastings Research Institute. She is viewed as different by everyone there. It's there that she meet Nobel-Prize nominated chemist Calvin Evans. Calvin who falls in love with Elizabeth is described as a loner, grudge holder, and extremely brilliant. Fast forward a few years and Elizabeth is now a single-mother working as the host of the most watched cooking show, Supper at Six . With Elizabeth's ways of ...

Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton Book Review

Reasons For Reading This Memoir: Every month I read the chosen book for  The Readheads podcast book club . The book chosen for September was Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton . I was excited to read this book because I was seeing it being read and reviewed by other book bloggers who I follow. Every review I saw was raving. As someone who is in a transitional phase in their life I was open to taking and learning from Dolly Alderton's life experiences. Content of the Memoir: Dolly recounts her experiences and lessons learned from university, drinking, dating, being dumped, friendship, getting a job, and accepting herself for who she is. Sprinkled throughout the memoir is recipes, lists, and emails full of satire. Everything I Know About Love is about finding yourself, love, friendship, and the trials and triumphs of becoming an adult.  What I Liked About the Memoir: Some memoirs are dense and require lots of focus when reading. Everything I Know About Love is lights...
