Dorm Room Organization
Organizing your dorm room as you unpack on 'Move In Day' is essential because it will kickstart your habit of staying organized throughout the course of the school year. In an upcoming blog post I will be sharing various ways to organize your dorm room closet, so be on the look out!
Dresser
Most dorms come with a built in dresser. The only problem is that the number of drawers in that dresser will vary depending on the school. My pro-tip when it comes to dressers is: Organize the content in the drawers the same way you had it at home. What I mean by this is if you have your pants in the bottom drawer of your dresser at home also have your pants in the bottom drawer in your dorm. By doing this you are tricking your body to preform habits that you have already developed. This also helps with making less noice well your roommate is sleeping because you don't have to open every drawer searching for where you put your pants. Another tip is the categorize your clothes. This can be done by putting all your pants together and then within the drawer making stacks of workout pants, sweatpants, pj bottoms, etc. I will be using this tip throughout the whole blog post.
Under the Bed Storage
When it comes to storage that will be placed under your bed you have to consider the height of the bed. Depending on your school they will either allow you to choose the height of your bed prior to moving in or they have a predetermined height that all of the beds are at.
Lofted Bed
I chose to loft my bed because I had a chair from my bedroom at home that I could not part with and had to bring with me to college. For additional storage I purchased a cubed Closet Maid organizer from Amazon. The dimensions of this piece of furniture are the perfect fit for under lofted beds. Not only does the piece allow for storage on the shelves, the height of the piece also makes for great storage on top as well. My roommate and I decided to place the TV and printer on the top of the organizer. When purchasing this piece of furniture I was skeptical of the quality, but I was proven wrong. Here is the link to the Fabric Storage Bins I also purchased.
Non-Lofted Bed
There are many ideas for storage for under beds that are not lofted. Here are a few ideas. If you do not mind the look of plastic, there the 3-Drawer Wide Tower from Target which fits perfectly under some standard dorm bed heights. Target also sells this same product in a medium size as well. This product is a good solution if you are looking for additional clothes storage.
If you are looking for an option that is less of the typical dorm room style and more on the simple and clean side of dorm room storage you could consider purchasing cube shelving that is smaller. Depending on the height of the bed you can even stack two of these 3-Cube Organizers on top of each other to maximize your space.
Desk and Dresser Drawer Organization
This is a drawer organizer from the Dollar Tree. I love this product. It comes in multiple sizes, which allows you to choose the size that fits the size or the drawer or the size of items you will be storing in it. One way I use this drawer organizer is to store my nail polish. There other way I use this is product is to store my pens, highlighters and hand-held hole punchers.
Desk Organization
This next product is something that I display on the top of my desk. This product is labeled as a drawer organizer, but depending on the height of your drawers you may or may not be able to use this product inside of a drawer.Overall Tip
If you find that they way you organized something is no longer working for you, take the time to organize it differently.
