Ombre Nails
The second trendy Pinterest DIY that I tested was ombre nails. As someone who enjoys painting and having her nails painted, I thought I would experiment and try my hand at nail art. DIY ombre nails have always been popular on Pinterest and are projected to be an easy nail design. This is the link to the Ombre Nails Pin I used as my reference for this DIY. Here is my experience with trying to recreate ombre nails.
Supplies
neutral nail polish color for base
two complementary nail polish colors
nail polish remover
make up sponge(s)
paint brush
orange stick
plastic or surface to mix colors
top coat
What I Used
Sally Hansen Triple Shine Nail Polish Lemon SharkSally Hansen Sunksed Sun Kissed Xtreme Wear Nail Polish
Sally Hansen Big Kwik Dry Top Nail Coat
Instructions
For the surface that I used to mix the nail polish on I cut a piece of plastic from packaging. Okay, now onto the nails. I started by preparing my nails as I always do. For more specifics on how I do that check out my blog post on How To: Perfect at Home Manicure.
I painted a thin layer of a pale blush nail polish from American Eagle on all of my nails. After letting that dry completely, I painted on another thin layer. Tip 1: make sure the base nail polish is completely dry before moving onto the ombre. If the polish is not dry then it will lift and move causing streaks and smudges.
On the piece of plastic I painted a stripe of orange and yellow polish and used an orange stick to swirl the two colors together where they met. This step insures that you will not have harsh lines between the two colors.
Next use a clean make up sponge to transfer the polish from the plastic to the nail. When applying the ombre make sure to cover the whole nail.
The pin I followed only showed applying one layer of ombre, but mine was still very translucent, so after letting the first layer of ombre dry, I repeated the same steps for a second layer of ombre.
Before the polish dries yes a paint brush and polish remover to clean up the nails and remove polish from the skin.
After being somewhat satisfied with how the ombre looked, I painted on my favorited top coat in hope of salvaging my attempt at DIY ombre nails.

Hit or Miss?
For me this DIY was a miss. First of all, I realized my choice of orange and yellow made it look like candy corn, which is good for the month of October, but not for May. And secondly, the ombre did not look as clean and nicely done as shown in the pin. I could blame this on it being my first tine trying it and the fact that the polish I was using usually requires three coats in order to be opaque. I also do not like that the application method for the polish causes it to get on the cuticle. Maybe with more practice I could become successful at this trendy Pinterest DIY. Any suggestions on how I could master this trend? By the way I cannot use the peel off products because they contain latex and I'm allergic.
