As someone who is an environmental studies major I am very passionate about sharing and educating on anything and everything to do with how people can work towards protecting and bettering the world we live in. Over the past year I have been implementing zero waste practices into my life. Currently I am not living 100% zero waste. With that being said I have complied a list of four of my favorite zero waste products for those who are just starting to work towards zero waste and for those who are just looking for products that are overall better for the environment. All of the products listed below can be found on Amazon.
Bamboo Utensils
Bamboo utensils are a great alternative to using plastic silverware. By eliminating the use of plastic silverware you are lessening the amount of waste that is being sent to the landfill or recycling center. Aside from the fact that bamboo utensils are beautiful, they are also reusable and biodegradable. I make sure to always carry a set around with me and love traveling with them too. Just a friendly reminder most bamboo silverware is not dishwasher safe. I wash mind with dish soap and hot water and set them aside to dry. One downside to this particular set of bamboo silverware is that it is packed in plastic that can not be recycled.
Safety Razor
I have to say this is one of the zero waste alternatives that freaked me out and that I thought I would never to able to get on board with. But when I was given an Amazon gift card I said "what the heck just order the dang thing." Before I started using a safety razor I read lots of blog posts and even watched a few videos. Even after using it for a month now I am still getting used to using it. I do have to say that it takes me a little bit longer to shave using a safety razor compared to a disposable razor and that is because I am more cautious. The reason safety razors are considered zero waste is because the razor and the blades can be recycled. Traditional disposable razors are another product that ends up in the landfill. This product is packaged in a recyclable cardboard box.
David's Natural Toothpaste
Not only does David's Natural Toothpaste come in a recyclable metal tube and cardboard box, but it also does not contain some of the chemicals that are in most toothpastes. Here is a list of some of the great pricks of this toothpaste: premium natural ingredients, no sodium lauryl sulfate, sulfate free, plant and earth based (vegan), sustainable packaging and a recyclable metal tube. As someone who is very picky on the flavor or level of mint in her toothpaste, I find that the peppermint essential oil blend is just the right about of minty flavor for me. I recommend this product to everyone and am constantly raving about it.
Bamboo Toothbrush
By making the switch from a plastic disposable toothbrush to a biodegradable bamboo toothbrush is one of the simplest zero waste practices you can easily accomplish. Before purchasing a bamboo toothbrush I would make sure to read the product description and reviews to make sure that all or most of the packaging is recyclable and/or made of recycled material. I recommend the company Brush with Bamboo because they clearly state that the toothbrush comes in compostable packaging.
